Reading is a very complicated thing!  There are many skills, processes and abilities which need to come together in order to read.  There are many different experts, theories, models, curriculums, and methods, all of which claim to be right.  My view is that most have good things to offer, but the human brain is a complicated thing, and what works for one, may not work for another.  If your child is struggling with reading (or you want to prevent your child from struggling) I hope this will provide some helpful information and a place to start exploring ideas to help your child with reading

  • Reading, writing and spelling are intertwined and should be taught together.
  • There are many ways to learn, and many ways to teach.  Keep trying different ways to teach until you find how your child learns best.  Your child has her or his own strengths and talents.  Use these strengths and talents to teach.
  • It’s your child’s job to learn to read.  It is the parents’ job to unconditionally love and support their children.  When you work with your own child, make sure he or she is over 95% accurate.  (See the ‘Working With Your Child’ page.)  This is where the best learning will occur, and this will help preserve your relationship.  Let the teacher be the ‘bad guy’ who doles out the work.  You can be the ‘good guy’ who helps.  Your relationship with your child is extremely important.  Please protect it.
